Can someone explain what's going on in Yemen right now? BBC article is predictably useless and propagandistic. For such a long time the Houthis have held out quite easily, but now they are being attacked from the south, reportedly by a UAE cfinanced force, most likely mercenaries and shit.

What happened that allowed them to approach Hodeida? Has the starvation just grown so much that the houthis are extremely weakened? Is there any chance to keep fighting if the city is lost? If the houthis were to surrender is there any hope that the Saudis would do anything other than just watch as Yemenis keep starving to death?

Ultimately the war will continue, especially as concerns over Iraq's stability arise again. The only thing that stops it is internal conflict/strife within the Saudi regime itself, but few outside the west have any solid idea on how large the potential for a civil war is there.

To top Democrats progressives are just this loud, annoying voice that prevents them from winning swing districts, even though these swing districts all voted for Trump because he advocated a progressive policy (trade reform). Their primary goal right now is to be the "sober" party where there is no populism or radicalism. They want all the radicals to fuck off because they don't consider them worth while.

based on the Radio war nerd episode from a few weeks ago it sounded like the main concern of the ISIS/Al qaeda people in Eastern yemen was to genocide the shias in Yemen. Very thick fog of war. There are reports on the one hand of the Houthi's cutting supply lines of the attacking forces and sinking a troopship. On the other hand, reports of strong air strikes, and US involvement on the Coalition side. Also reports of a strong attack by the supposedly cut-off forces. With the necessary resupply by the sea and air by the Americans, all these things might be true at the same time.

If Iraq falls to bits then Saudis and America have to commit more resources to dealing with that situation in the north, both aircraft and men. Saudi Arabia is so incompetent they can't fight two fronts on opposite sides of their country, so a situation in Iraq would help Yemeni rebels. It would also strain US forces which are unlikely to see large garrisons unless the Korean situation is able to wrap up quickly.

yep, this is their plan for Iraq's shias too hence why they did not retreat when confronted. Also if there's an incident in Iraq that threatens Iraq's basic stability, their new shia leader will probably ask Iran for help and create a fucking mess of American foreign policy. The blockade is a pain in this regard to. One hopes they could smuggle in things via Oman - the rulers there like to keep everyone their friend.

Also, I don't know if you know, but the image is a reference to an earlier instances where Houthi coastal missile batteries sunk a UAE chartered ship carrying troops. Afterwards, US warships destroyed all know batteries under a flimsy pretext of having been targeted.

I didn't realize iraq was still so volatile, I would have thought the Saudis had given up on the Iraq after the defeat of ISIS and being absolutely useless in Yemen

one thing that I take solace from is that the new iraqi government seems pretty cool, Shias and communists, what more can you ask for?

I love to imagine an American general seeing that communists and shias (secret iranians according to Americans) won the election and getting an existential crisis and asking if it really was good to bring democracy to Iraq

Don't worry, they'll get their comeuppance in the form of the inevitable siege of Baghdad by Islamist forces. Islamofascism is the only constant in the region and the only one with any real durability, eventually it will spread from Iraq into Saudi Arabia and instigate a global crisis as oil supplies are disrupted meanwhile the holy city of Islam gets taken over by people who explicitly hate the west and will use it as a vehicle to train people in destroying the west from within. This will contribute greatly to the decline of the current world order, especially if they manage to do a big enough terrorist attack in the west.

Which is what the end of this road is: the oil getting shut off and the west moving on from the mideast, which will gradually form into something capable of fighting the west symmetrically. But this is decades from now.

Iraq won't ever not be fixed because the only stable thing is radical Islam. As America tries drawing down troops for the THIRD time (first was '04, second '11) IS will reoccupy regions where they are already operating as a mafia, which is outside of what combat forces (Saudi, American, ISF) can handle. At some point Americans will just get frustrated and walk off, creating the situation that befell Iraq 2012-16 when ISIS was fast growing in the power vacuum.

Not much but figure that once fighting begins again this will force Iraq into an alliance with Iran, a thing that will piss off Trump and cause America to end all support for Baghdad while also causing Israel to bomb Iraqi positions in the western part of the country, further accelerating ISIS's spread.
