Can someone explain what's going on in Yemen right now? BBC article is predictably useless and propagandistic. For such a long time the Houthis have held out quite easily, but now they are being attacked from the south, reportedly by a UAE cfinanced force, most likely mercenaries and shit.

What happened that allowed them to approach Hodeida? Has the starvation just grown so much that the houthis are extremely weakened? Is there any chance to keep fighting if the city is lost? If the houthis were to surrender is there any hope that the Saudis would do anything other than just watch as Yemenis keep starving to death?

The whole country is lost, yet the people endure. In seriousness the famine will just continue until so many are dead there are not any soldiers, even child soldiers, left to take up arms against the Saudi-backed forces. This would be a foolproof plan if it wasn't for the fact that wherever rebels fail ISIS is able to seep in and setup terrorist cells, which will expand into uniformed forces once Saudi-backed troops leave.

Ultimately the war will continue, especially as concerns over Iraq's stability arise again. The only thing that stops it is internal conflict/strife within the Saudi regime itself, but few outside the west have any solid idea on how large the potential for a civil war is there.

They don't care about progressive views and have been very open about this. If you check the actual rhetoric Democrat leaders believe they lost not due to populism but because of Russian media manipulation and Russian-friendly progressives forcing candidates to the left on issues like healthcare or student loans. Going into 2018 and 2020 their primary concerns are going to be "moderate" immigration reform, gun control, and car emissions laws. Trump's approval of Medicare expansion for better or worse prevents them from using that as bait for voters, meanwhile Trump's tariffs prevent them from courting manufacturing workers.

To top Democrats progressives are just this loud, annoying voice that prevents them from winning swing districts, even though these swing districts all voted for Trump because he advocated a progressive policy (trade reform). Their primary goal right now is to be the "sober" party where there is no populism or radicalism. They want all the radicals to fuck off because they don't consider them worth while.

What sort of faction could there possibly be in the Saudi elite that would oppose the war in Yemen? Aren't the conflicts on the elite level superficial bullshit, similar to what you would see in a 17th century European royal court?

Or is the risk for civil war in Saudi more a question of the poor minorities, (mostly shia I imagine) rising up against the upper classes

based on the Radio war nerd episode from a few weeks ago it sounded like the main concern of the ISIS/Al qaeda people in Eastern yemen was to genocide the shias in Yemen. Unfortunately it seems as if the Saudis have done extremely well since the grand mosque seizure to turn radical jihad into a weapon against their enemys. i would love nothing more than to see Al-Qaeda attack the corrupt Saudi elites
