You have it backward with the socialist approach. The general consensus was that work of everyone was wanted, so everyone could find a way to contribute towards building of socialism. The result was that nobody felt useless and alienated as capitalism is known to induce these feelings.
In fact the state encouraged young people to start families. So as a result, absolute majority of people had functioning family or dating lives.
This was never a primary motivation. The motivation is to uplift the mankind, aspire to higher goals of building socialism. Not inventing activities to keep young males engaged in those made up activities, just so they do not become idle and cause trouble. Such statement is idiotic.
