I personally find Germany to be a fascinating example of the divide between those who lived under a nominally socialist state and those who did not.
Those in western Germany (whose exposure to socialism was mostly via western propaganda rather then lived experience) can be broadly described, based upon voting habits as either neo-liberals or neo-conservatives.
While both neo-liberals and neo-conservatives are of-course represented in eastern Germany, voting data routinely shows that the modern successor party (more or less) to the SED is supported by well over a quarter of the population.
Had eastern bloc nations been as bad as capitalist media suggests, one would expect the voting data to show the opposite to be true.
With areas that have directly experienced the 'horrors' of socialism (eastern Germany in this instance) to be the most anti-socialist and those areas that have not experienced socialism to be the most supportive of socialism due to simple naivety.
Ostalgie, nostalgia for socialism and eastern Germany remains strong in the minds of many.

The irony of East-West German comparison is that Germany has all the contradictions of crapitalism. It has very large GDP per capita, yet home ownership is extremely low, people can't afford healthy food, and many more problems. As a result,despite superb climate. the population is very depressed, and people can't even afford to have children. Germany has the lowest birthrate in the world.
