Here's a good tip: More often than not an automatic rifle beats a bolt-action at ranges below 300 meters. This is mostly thanks to its ability to spew out a superior volume of fire at short warning.
Beyond 300 meters this advantage starts to fall off, as greater care, and therefore a longer aiming time, needs to be taken in order to reliably hit a human-sized target. Therefore a somewhat skilled and mobile rifleman can outmatch his automatic counterpart, assuming he doesn't root himself to one spot after firing more than one or two aimed shots.
This does not mean that an automatic weapon is useless beyond 300 meters nor that a bolt-action is useless below, quite the opposite. What it implies is merely that the auto can't effectively out-spam the bolt-action in the same way as on shorter ranges. This allows our bolt-actioneer some breathing space and some reliable and effective tactics to counter his more quick-drawish counterpart.
