Current Russia

Apart from the supposed interference in the 2016 election (which at this point is a mere conspiracy theory), why do American liberals consider Russia to be an enemy? US-Russia relations were very good under Obama. It was neoconservatives like Mitt Romney who were pushing the idea that Russia was America's number-one geopolitical threat.

What threat is Russia to Americans, from any left-wing perspective. Liberals, SJWs, Communists, Socialists, Progressives are all welcomed to give their thoughts in this thread.

This was only opposed by neoconservatives like John McCain. Liberals correctly identified Georgia as a failed puppet state.

Again, it was neoconservatives who were supporting the failed puppet state of Ukraine. People like Paul Manafort were lobbying Congress to get involved. President Obama rightly noted that Ukraine was not a NATO member, and thus it was no business of the US to get involved.

There are many US allies that have a far worse track record on gay rights than Russia, among them Georgia and Ukraine, as well as Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Israel, Turkey, Pakistan, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, all of Africa, and China. Russia is very tolerant of homosexuality. In regards to Pussy Riot and other homosexual agitators, they were arrested not for their beliefs or identities, but for breaking very clear laws, such as when Pussy Riot broke into a church and staged a music video without a permit. Russia has very serious laws that protect national treasures and monuments.

no, they degraded significantly, they just weren't as openly hostile
Russia hasn't forgotten the rape of the 90s nor the attempts to break up Russia, along with moving American military assets to as many borders as they can despite long standing agreements made with the USSR prior to breakup.

Really none, it's a threat to the American Empire in that they and the Chinese are working and starting to break the unipolar world, and as a result of that America is entering terminal imperial decline. One of the factors of this decline is the US starting to become far more openly hostile to anyone they see as either a competing power or a power breaking from the American Empire

So is the Left now pro-American Empire?

What part of that post made you think that?

The American "left" is like Gollum from LOTR. They once had social fascist system in place for their gibs and they want it back. They will say and do anything to restore the old right wing social democracy they used to have.

you mean liberals, and they've always been pro-American Empire, the entire establishment has always been pro-American Empire

To actual American leftists they’re a lesser threat than their own government, but they seem all to friendly towards far right forces, as a country operate as neo fascists, so they shouldn’t be trusted either. Especially their sickening and hallow co-opting of Marxist symbols.

Good point but please never use franchises as examples to simplify real-life political situations.

...

Obama was an establishment liberal? He was the most progressive president in history.

Name another president who would've started daca?

Also this, when summed up Russia is a far lesser power than the US when considering how to bring about revolution and a multipolar world is a far better situation to bring about revolution

He tried to stop the pink tide in south america. Not very leftist if you ask me.

Name another president that has deported more immigrants than him

Tell us how Obama and his administration did not destroy the Pink Tide in SA during the years of his administration. Please liberal get out

I'm just telling you how it's presented here. To be truthful nobody really cares. We all just gear up to hate whoever they tell us to hate.
Obviously the USA doesn't care about human rights abuses. Obviously Americans don't care about human rights abuses. Obviously The UN doesn't care about human rights abuses. There's just factions(sports teams) at the top duking it out for who can make the most money off their pet international projects.

We even let them do this in America with full immunity.

Haven't they convicted people in a real jury?

Not really much better, no. And it was around this time that the American conservative cult around Putin started becoming more noticeable - when the media caught on to the stuff about gays, Pussy Riot, stuff like that. There were a lot of American social conservatives who saw Putin as a savior of white Christian values, whereas Obama was a black Muslim who loved illegals or something retarded like that.

But US-Russia relations are still "good" even now in the sense that as long as we share a space program with them there's some room for deterioration.

Russia is of little threat to America, but since 2016 they've moved up in influence and do act more as a sort of competing bloc than they really had for some time.

I'm not sure that Georgia and Ukraine (or even "all of Africa" - Namibia is hardly any worse than Russia on this, now) are even among those - but the primary concern wrt to Russia's actions was the steps it took backwards. It's stuff that's expected of middle-eastern goatfuckers, but not so much of Russia.

And in my eyes Russia, indeed, offered disproportionate penalties for fags and feminists (ie Pussy Riot) compared to what it was giving its neo-Nazi thugs around this period. Tesak, for instance - this guy was an open neo-Nazi whose shtick was leading armies of kids to sexually humiliate "pedophiles" (usually just gay dudes they set up dubious stings for) - and by this point he already had a criminal record. But he was nevertheless filming these antics, and it made him one of the top YT channels in Russia. Anons actually started reporting him to interpol, but then he wasn't even arrested (on separate charges of some racist thing he said) until he fled to Cuba later on. Given the kind of stuff Russia is capable of cracking down on, it seems like they could easily have arrested him themselves simply on account that he was going around harassing people.

Also, Russia is (rightfully) seen as something of a threat by states which comprised the former Soviet Bloc, and Russia has some imperialist inclinations with regards to these countries. But, Russia is largely not a threat to the US aside from efforts to end the unipolar order mentioned by another poster. That's neither necessarily bad nor a real 'threat' in the military sense. Russia today is still really, really reactionary, though. I'm more concerned about other leaders adopting the authoritarian capitalist model, though.

This. Russophiles are delusional.

There are no unironic left wing russophiles in the US. They just want America to be defeated. That is all. Is that so wrong?

There probably are, although a minority.
Of course no, but wanting the US to be defeated isn't the same thing as being a russophile.

Just more Saudis being Saudis.

Personally, I was working to embrace good US-Russian relations and encouraging leaders to do so as well. I refocused my socks, wrote good blog pieces, lobbied local leaders, started reading RT, was taking Glenn Greenwald seriously (Jimmy Dore too) and encouraged my close knit group of very effective activists to move past the hostilities. I was educating using Mao, Lenin, Marx and French revolutionary theories to aid better relations. I honestly did all these things.

Then, I got the distinct impression that the left wing voices all of a sudden started sabotaging the socialist movement by encouraging a massive fascist Republican red wave for later socialist gains. A sucker is born every minute, and that sounds like a plan for suckers. To top it off, I didn't feel leading socialist voices treated the facts surrounding the very public lies, confessions and evidence in an intellectually honest manner. So I lost respect for them. Furthermore, I came to realize from reading Mao that taking the concerns of the majority of Americans seriously, whom want reassurance of a coalition against Trump, and e-celebs less seriously was key to opening minds to a proletariat ruling party. Finally, I became suspicious that there were ulterior motives in the new socialist line to encourage red wave right before midterms. So I abandoned mainstream socialist direction, and advocacy of good relations with Russia, to iron all these things out. I believe the greatest threat to historical and socialist advancement in my country is the rise of fascism. So I use my activism time differently hoping to prevent socialists from making the same mistakes that have crushed them before in rising fascist nations, and to redirect what I suspect to be information warfare against the interests of everyone it might benefit most.

My focus is on preventing a permanent right wing fascist hegemony in America first and foremost. Socialism 2nd. Socialist marching orders last.

2 final notes
1) My opposition to a fascist red wave creating socialist gains later rests on what should be obvious. Fascists don't relinquish power, always clamp down on opposing views and ultra amplify their own. We see that with proposed regulation of press and media, 15 year jail sentences for antifa and anti-emancipatory politics composed of purely biopolitics of fear from the modern Republican media outlets and leaders.

2) I will be happy to canvass for better relations with Russia, lobby for them and promote the idea… After I no longer have to worry about right wing fascism or if a democratic socialist government comes to power. Right now I simply don't have the time or inclination. I currently hold all of America's significant foreign relations suspect in their interests for my government, and it's current state.
