A friend of mine was telling me a story about his dad who traveled to the north during the Troubles to check it out. He was down for the cause but not in the IRA. Unfortunately for him, while he was staying in some small town, the IRA decided to blow up the local police station. Cue the RUC pulling in all their local contacts to squeeze for any info on suspicious persons. One says "well there is this long-haired, hippie-looking American who showed up a few days ago."
Immediately the RUC is like "oh shit" because this "foreign fighter" scenario is what they were dreading. Cue friend's dad getting his room raided by a tactical team, following by him getting bagged away and interrogated by some very severe Northern Irish cops for awhile. They let him go though.
Anyways I have never been there but I did some Google street view tours of Belfast to check out the murals. The weird Trumpy nationalism we've got over here in the States now reminds me a bit of Ulster loyalism; like this aggrieved, absurdist-parody nationalism of a dominant tribe in decline. Also reminded me of seeing these right-wing marches in the U.S. in liberal cities. The loyalists in Northern Ireland try to march into Catholic areas as a provocation and to spark riots.
I'd also scroll past graffiti in Catholic areas of "RAD" or something like that which meant "Republicans Against Drugs" who are known for shooting drug dealers in the kneecaps. Fucking brutal.

It wasn't. The IRA was a secular socialist organization. It was a conflict primarily concerned with politics. Hell, many of the OG republican heroes celebrated in Ireland were protestant. The IRA had many atheists, protestants and even some jews in their ranks. It just so happened that most republicans were catholic and unionists protestants due to historical reasons, even the catholic church condemened the group. Nobody was killed on the basis of believing the wrong biblical doctrine and not once did they cite religion for their actions or purposefully targeted churches and clergy.

The troubles main motivator still wasn't religious. True the loyalists did target catholic civilians a lot of times, but only because republican supporters were almost all catholics. It wasn't on the basis of them believing the wrong biblical doctrine.
