He did good enough to support himself and Marx.

The idea that Engels was a capitalist is a misconception. His parents owned a factory but Engels himself was only employed in it as a clerk. He never owned independent capital.

I don't know the specifics of his biography but it's clear that Engels never was the cigar-smoking tophat-wearing porky that people made him out to be. He was Fred from Accounting for most of his life and eventually left the firm. His donations to Marx were also only survivable at the best of times, and not for the lack of trying.

According to Mary Gabriel’s book Engels died a millionaire in the 1890s. Assuming that she was talking about British pounds and not dollars (which seems likely) then Engels was part of a group of just a few hundred super-wealthy men living in Britain at the time.

Although I haven’t found any corrollation in other sources (such as Rubinstein) I find it probable given how poor records on wealth were and given the fact that it was Engels money that drove the SDP for years.

On an unrelated note, utopian socialist Robert Owen was a pound millionaire in the late 18th century and that was extremely rare, especially for anyone who wasn’t born a literal blue blooded aristocrat.
