It didn't really 'split', it was formed out of necessity cause people who were banned on Zig Forums by the ban-happy mod had to go somewhere to discuss leftist politics.
The leftypol BO took way too long to do something about the mod. In fact, the mod had BO's support until there were something like a 100+ IPs banned in a day and the BO saw the post/IP count dropped massively.
