There was no law against being a millionaire and there were numerous soviet millionaires throughout the years (both rouble millionaires and even some dollar millionaires), most of them were artists and writers like Sergey Mikhalkov, a children's books author (also penned the soviet anthem), science fiction author Aleksey Tolstoy or architect Zurab Tsereteli.
There were even periods when soviet propaganda explicitly touted kolkhoz millionaires to demonstrate the success and prosperity brought to people by collectivisation.

While my parents hated the cold war era government for ideological reasons, they never ever say their lives sucked, neither do my grandparents. In urban areas of the eastern block, people lived genuinely happy and fulfilling lives. Yeah, you could only buy bananas like once a year, and most other exotic fruits were expensive as shit, but people just didn't care. Nobody starved, or was short of any basic needs. Homelessness was nonexistant, kids could leave home for university and would never have to return, since they were pretty much guaranteed a high-end job with a university degree. I'm not gonna say that life was definitely better back then than it is now, but both eras have their own distinct pros and contras.

That's one of the biggest benefits Pact countries offered tbh. You do a degree, you get assigned a job, no questions asked. Imagine not having to job hunt at all. I've heard our government wants to implement something similar but under a cappie economy that's basically legalized slavery lmao.
