Yemen Civil War thread - /ycw/

This thread is for discussing things pertaining to Yemen and its ongoing civil war.
First pic is just a map I tore from Wikipedia, the two latter maps from 4/sg/ may be more up to date.
So what is your general analysis on this situation, Zig Forums? As OP of this thread I make it because I wish to learn more about the topic.
In particular I am wondering what you think of the Southern Transitional Council. To my understanding they want to bring back South Yemen which was backed by the Soviet Union, but apparently they are now backed by the United Arab Emirates. Is this why leftist anti-imperialists support the Houthis instead of them?

Where do I even start if I know almost nothing about this conflict other than the bare basics? All of these Middle Eastern conflicts are so complex

...

I've seen nothing about the Southern Transitional Council that indicates a socialist or communist position. I doubt the UAE would back communists living only a block away from literal crowned heads.

Thanks user

I've only read that the communists united with the north and were betray, tried a revolution and failed. I think that maybe they are more socdem or at least not communist, only (true, how the emirates could support a communist movement?)

So northern Yemeni communists tried to overtake the Houthis and failed?

By the time of unification, they basically abandoned communism and became socdems.
In the 1994 Civil War, they were literally backed by Saudi Arabia.

Hadi regime officials flee Yemen as UAE moves to take over Aden

>“We assure our people in all the southern provinces that we support a popular uprising which would end the suffering, and we insist that it be peaceful,” the STC statement read. The call for rebellion against Hadi came despite the fact that the UAE is officially in alliance with Saudi Arabia and the Hadi regime.

Wew lad. Were the STC always rouge or are they barely becoming a separate faction in the war(

SPY / STC could have been a good choice if they had not completely cucked out to Hadi / Sauds

Saudi's getting BTFO with no end in sight, Specialists say

The country is literally under siege, with tens of thousands starving, And Saudis are still getting btfo?

There was a nice photo reportage in the nyt the other day, you should check it out. Has an endless column of burned out armored cars of Gulf puppets. The blinders are suddenly off after the Khashoggi kerfuffle.

Saudis literally had to kneecap their military after the Iraqi, Libyan, and Egyptian kings were all overthrown by their officers.

That can be expected, especially since in terms of operational conduct you for example cannot call upon airstrikes or artillery support via radio, but you would have to report to superior officers above rank of sergeant in person what leads to situation where you can have to wait for up to 60 minutes to get any kind of support. Secondly saudi officer core is filled with members of royal saudi houses leading to incompetent officers with little to no military training promoted purely on basis of nepotism. As for the rank and file, they are the worst kind of professional army since they completely lack in discipline and are more like highly paid civil servants than military personnel.

Yup, apparently you can buy your rank in the Saudi army. This also leads to bizarre situations where people buy into specialist roles and are unable to use certain weapons, which then get captured by Houthis who know how to use the weapons from experience and use them against the Saudis. This was how the Saudi capital came under missile fire from Houthis in flip flops a couple years back.
It's also why they can't advance, because the officer positions are all bought out by the royals.

Yeah, also all of their equipment is built by foreign nations along all of their munitions. Rebels could effectively render the entire saudi forces useless with one modern submarine if they had it.

Because the Saudi Military isn’t designed for overseas military excursions or even for Defense. The Saudi Military’s purpose is to ensure than the Current regime remains in power at all cost, and to silence descent. Which is nessicary for the Saudi regime to remain in power. The Saudi Military is essentially a really big secret police, and there good and this, but this makes them shit at fighting wars.

To make it even more embarassing, the liberation of The Grand Mosque in 1979 got assists from Pakistan and France.

No wonder they opt for bombing, bombing and even more bombing. Because you can't be a total chump if you fly a jet. And even if you bought the chance to be a pilot, it's quite easy to wash out.
