They actually had a decent level of popular support at the time, something like 20% of West Germans at the time supported them. Of course, in the end they failed, but so have plenty of genuine and fairly effective revolutionaries (the Black Panthers, the IRA, etc.)

The Black Panthers were wiped out and larp fags caused the introduction of black gangs that ultimately damaged black communities worse than it helped them, the IRA I don't care about which says a lot.
