To become a superpower it is absolutely essential to have a developed economy, an army equipped with atomic bombs...

Was he right all along? Also, Hoxha general, he's not a theorist who gets as much love as the better known MLs
Thomas Cox
what did he mean by this
Nathaniel Morris
Hoxha was so based, you can even comprehend the base levels right now
Dylan Cruz
Hoxha was right about the big stuff but he was also insane, which is why he stuck to extreme orthodox (and correct) Marxism-Leninism while the rest of the communist world went revisionist. It takes a certain kind of fine-grained insanity to do that. It's funny to read Maoist literature from that time which accused Hoxha of being a "dogmato-revisionist" because he was so orthodox he couldn't see the innovations from Mao and so therefore he was revisionist by sheer virtue of being so dogmatically orthodox. Wrap your head around that.
He was wrong about Albania's inexhaustible means, resources and capacities though. He was quite wrong about that because Albania was a poor, isolated country that could not survive on its own when faced with capitalist restoration elsewhere. Oh well. He was basically the Cassandra of the communist world who was both powerless to change the future but also (correctly) predicted it and no one else wanted to hear him out.
Caleb Flores
It's not a correct line to isolate yourself in a hermit kingdom. Also, most of the critcism he leveled against other communist leaders is hyprocritical, as he enforced more or less the same shit. Marxism-Leninism is not a dogma, nor an orthodoxy outside the Marxist philosophical framework. His accusations against Cuba are also pure edge and completely nuts, and accusing the Cuban Revolution for being merely national liberationist and not socialism might even be true, but again, it's hypocritical because Hoxhaism supports various national liberation movements.
Is that movie quote real?
Christian Brooks
They're right about that though. Hoxha was a retarded "dogmato-revisionist". There is nothing "properly Marxist" about adhering to the writings of a few individuals in the same way christian fundamentalists follow the bible. I admit that the term "dogmato-revisionism" sounds sort of funny and contradictory though.

You see this where Hoxha began to become retarded and make mistakes
Despite the progress he made in Albania his petty split from the USSR and his intentional isolation from most of the socialist world flatlined the Albanian economy and made it one of the worst states in Europe economically and in turns of Standard of living

So is Hoxha's Albania proof that a socialist state can't into isolationism, at least in a world dominated by capitalism? How self-sufficient can a country the size of Albania really be? I mean it's not like it had the potential or land mass of Russia.
Charles Kelly
Yes
Not very
After its official split from the CMEA / WP in the 60s its economy flatlined as it readjusted to trading with China
Once Ties were cut with China the economy more or less flatlined between the late 70s and the fall of socialist Albania
Kayden Sullivan
Albania was completely self sufficient by the late 70s, but had many issues.
Christian Cook
No state can really into isolationism. Economic autarky sounds good on paper, but in practice you can’t really achieve more than a base level of existence for your population. At least that’s the case for small countries like Albania and the DPRK.
Evan Foster
In terms of Agriculture and basic services yes but in terms of economic expansion / Technological advancement / Trade very not so
It should be noted that one of the first acts that the Party of Labor took after Hoxha's death was to begin attempting to rebuild all the bridges that Hoxha Burnt
By 1991 some progress had been made with China but the CMEA/WP had already crumbled and the Soviets were on the way out

Cuba has low levels of foreign investment and trade and has a high HDI index.
Brandon Bell
Cuba Legalized Petite-Bougie Enterprise a number of years ago and is now moving towards a Chinese style birdcage investment scheme and also received developmental aid from the USSR the entire cold war as opposed to Albania which got the tap tutned off in the 60s
Austin Miller
Cuba engages in plenty of foreign trade though, which isn’t the same as foreign investment. Also like Kampuchea user said, they were a major recipient of Soviet aid right up until 1991.
Jose Hernandez
Yes, but this was more than twenty years after the USSR fell. And it’s no where to the extent China has.
Nathaniel Robinson
Unlike Hoxhaist Albania, the DPRK was not retarded and maintained links to both China, USSR, and other socialist states instead of calling them revisionist and cutting off relations.
Michael Hernandez
And then the DPRK suffered a major famine with the fall of the USSR
Henry Reed
The DPRK still makes its economic situation worse by self imposing much of its own economic isolation. The sanctions are a major part of this of course, but it began its own isolation in the 80s when Kim Il Sung was formulating Juche.
Aaron Roberts
completely retarded comment
Landon Hernandez
Economic autarky is a core element of Juche, and it requires a degree of self-isolation. Obviously the sanctions are the main cause of much of their problems, but I think that their policies regarding autarky are making things worse, not better.
