Tbh the Ukrainians are pretty fash, but the Russians and pro-Russians aren't that much better, their ideology is most frequently described as religious, traditionalist Russian nationalism. It's basically the ideology of the Tsars. While the ethnic Russians in Donbass have lots of legitimate grievances against Kiev, they are ultimately serving Russian geopolitical interests. I would probably consider this to be an inter-imperialist proxy conflict. Just because Russia has legitimate national security interests in Ukraine (such as keeping NATO expansion at bay) doesn't mean they also dont have their own imperial ambitions there. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Working backwards from Poroshenko declaring martial law, could the flotilla of ships have been trying to look like they were using the tug as a potential demolition ship like how the British filled up an old destroyer with explosives to fuck up Germany's forward port in France during a large scale commando raid in WWII? Others also likely just endorse Russian nationalism which is in competition with Ukrainian nationalism. This isn’t reason to oppose them, but it also means that their motivations are rooted in reactionary ideology. I didn’t say that they are reactionaries because they are resisting Kiev. I said that their ideology is itself reactionary because it promotes Russian ethnonationalism, Orthodox Christianity, etc. Bourgeois states are reactionary fam, and by the standards of bourgeois states Putin’s government is more reactionary than most.
