Angola and Congo both were cold war battlegrounds. Angola specifically had to fight in independence and civil war. Congo, Zaire was western puppet and then battlefield of two Congo wars.
During cold war, during decolonization, west gave certain countries freedom, but in turn local monarchs had to be pro west. Cetain countries like Egypt,Iraq and Syria had revolutions and allied with Soviets.. Anyways, in tradition of capitalism, gulf states have large wealth inequality , but overall they are just lucky that their masters won the cold war.
