believe it or not, the USSR and Russia are actually on the same place on a map, with similar resources and similar population. This means, that their geopolitical interests haven't changed.

The USSR had more countries in it ;^] and they were socialist. Venezuela may not be but it would make sense for a socialst country to defend them. Does Russia profit from doing this? Do they want Venezuela's crappy crude?

Gives them leverage over the U.S. by interfering in their sphere. Basically "we're now doing something you don't want us to do. What are you going to do about it?". The hope probably being some concessions elsewhere. This is just speculation of course, but it's one reason why you'd want to do this as Russia

Russia has arms deals with Venezuela. When Chavez was alive he pursued relations with places like Iran, Russia, etc.
