I don't really take a "good or bad" binary opinion on it. I more look at monument destruction (and monument building) as reflecting changes in the political order and so on. It's not surprising that people do either. They're just statues.

What I think we're seeing in the U.S. South is that a wave of these things were built to reinforce the ruling class ideology in two waves: one being in the early 20th century as a response to rising labor agitation and the global aftershocks of 1917 (which kicked off a whole bunch of them being built, along with the rise of the second-wave Klan) and again during the civil rights movement in the 1950s. Now you see statutes being removed or just downright torn down by mobs in Raleigh-Durham, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, etc. A century ago these were pretty small places and now they're cosmopolitan boom cities. It's not surprising at all.

I assume donating to this project at this point simply tells of bitter and salty stubbornness. This sort of desperate bid tells to me that the donators just want the wall to be built for no other reason so they can say it's been done. No matter how shitty and useless it truly is, no matter who ultimately has to pay for it. They just want to win on that one grand thing they had as central mantra during the elections.
They want a monument as proof of their perceived success. Something physical and concrete to reassure themselves, to support themselves on. After all, policy and law are nebulous and complex things, hard to understand fully, which must be adapted to actual realities, allowing deviations to be forgiven by some vague explanation, and mental gymnastics be used to get past such failures. (4D chess!!1!)
But building a massive physical barrier across the entire border? That's either a yes or a no, there's no dodging that. It's critical to them, and it shows. They can't let him fail, so they literally throw money at the problem, hoping it solves the issue before they're at risk of questioning the infallibility of their chosen lord.

But some lose millions, or even a billion, don't buy things like that.
I wonder where the cash'll go? There ain't gonna be no wall, no matter if this crowdfunding thing succeeds, but the money…

The truth is that the wall was always a MacGuffin: it was always something to be imagined and to be desired – to advance the campaign and the Trump movement. It was a plot device in a postmodern fairytale. This is the narrative unraveling because postmodernism is stupid and doesn't accord with reality, which is now hitting the administration and its supporters.

Depending on context/historical value, either tear them down or add some kind of explanatory guide situating those monuments and stating that they are only preserved for historical reasons.
You're not saving the workers who perished building them either way.

In the case of Confederate monuments, many were introduced long after the Civil War, mainly the early 1900s and late 1800s (probably related to the race riots and the proto-civil rights activists reacting to Jim Crow) and during the Civil Rights Movement (intention behind erecting these monuments during that time should be obvious).

It's also worth noting that Robert E. Lee who is honored in many of these Confederate monuments opposed these sorts of monuments being built. Though it's also worth clarifying that he probably opposed them in the context that he opposed ``all`` Civil War monuments being built. A prominent example of a Robert E. Lee statue which had its planned removal protested: the one in Charlottesville.

This might not be totally in spirit with answering your question. But I have to emphasize as somebody from the South how many of these monuments are really monuments in spirit to the KKK and intimidation of blacks rather than any real respect for "heritage", history, or even the historical figures they claim to honor.

I've been to civil war battlefields and depending on what's being counted, a big chunk of confederate monuments are basically just plaques listing casualties (same as union ones). A lot of those weren't put up until the early 1900s when the survivors were old men who had enough money to pool together for the monuments. Gettysburg is pretty sobering honestly. In some places there's just rows and rows of plaques naming dead soldiers from this or that unit. The sheer scale of war is something that people should be able to see that way.

I kind of instantly regretted not including this in my post, but I definitely wasn't saying all that to advocate tearing all the monuments down or something. At a bare minimum the ones erected during and right after the Civil War need to be preserved. Other than that, there are probably many instances like what you mentioned which are inoffensive historical pieces.

In fact even many of the ones erected for what I suspect are racist intentions should be preserved for exactly the reason that they can be viewed and have plaques etc. to explain that they were erected during times of greater racial tension. That statistical rise during the Civil Rights Movement and during times of race riots doesn't seem insignificant to me.

But I don't really blame people for wanting many of them removed. And I especially don't blame people for wanting schools renamed when they were named to honor KKK members or that type of thing. I probably have a more conservative take on taking down monuments than most. I just want it put into a more historically accurate context than people usually hear.

The battlefield monuments are fine. But if you go to a lot of Southern towns you'll see a statue outside of the courthouse dominating the entrance to the grounds with statements about fighting for the Anglo-Saxon race and shit like that.
