Talking to my Russian boomer parents I've come to the realization that in the late 70's and 80's the reason they took down the Soviet Union was mostly because they wanted shit like Jeans, rock bands and coke. They acknowledge that the living standards were good, education and healthcare was good but muh rock music was not allowed. iirc the craze was specifically regarding high quality stylish imported jeans. The poliburo should have just taken note of what specific styles were being smuggled into the country and mass produced those domestically to satiate the public's desires.

Reading the UN report from the 90's is quite painful. So many communist and soft-socialist states had high quality of life without exploiting other and engaging in imperialism. People were happy, healthy, well feed and had many kids who would grow up to be doctors, engines, workers and astronauts. Yemen, Libya,Iraq and Syria all had relatively high income and high, growing standards of living,.. But because some a-holes and reactionaries decided to rob almost 300 million people of Soviet Union and worker achieved wealth, against the popular referendum, they destroyed Soviet Union and ceased support for socialist allies, many of whom have been turned into war zones.
