From a third-worldist perspective there is truth to what Chodemonkey is saying. Substitute "millennials" and "children" with "first worlders" and "animu and vidya" with "entertainment, consumer electronics, pornography, recreational drugs, fast food and easy sex" (because they're effective opiates / escapist activities provided by industrialised liberal democracy) and it would be more accurate. More likely though he's looking at it from a rightist "pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps" perspective passed down from his father where one shouldn't pay much attention to the socioeconomic system but instead blame people's individual choices.
