So was the dissolution of Yugoslavia

But the socialist state governments should have been able to prevent the capitalist sabotage? It doesn't bode well for future socialist movements if nationalism and other identity politics can cause them to dissolve.

In Yugoslavia it all started when after WW1 the Croats and Slovens wanted to join in a union with Serbia to become The kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovens.
This of course, didn't sit well with all of them, and soon you started getting a minority Croats wanting independence from Serbia, something which just kept growing over the years.
At one point the king couldn't be bothered by all of it and banned the usage of Serb, Croat and Slovens and made us all Yugoslovens.

This is more or less when all the shit started in this place. The separatists movements got larger and more dangerous, up to the point where they assassinated king Aleksandar Karadjordjevic the first in Marseille, France.

Then we had ww2 where a lot of Croats and Bosnians were part of local SS divisions and axis backing militias and only by the end of the war, honestly it's pretty odd how by the end of the war they suddenly had a lot of partisan groups.
Anyhow, Tito just inherited the Yugoslavia name and thought to try his luck with it, but it was already tainted by that point by hate and mistrust between the peoples.
Maybe we if we had another 20-30 years, education and companionship would have done away with those old wounds, but we didn't.

The other conflicts pale to the Serb-Croatian one here, in Bosnia you literally had Saudi backed mujaheddin and Iran backed volunteers fighting for different factions. Macedonia is still thorn up between WE WUZ GREEKZ, the Bulgarian and the Albanian factions and Montenegro is trying to create a new ethnicity for itself (Trying to do away the history that they were basically the part of Serbia that was governed by princes)

Yugoslavia was doing pretty well in the 80s, there was no reason for it to shit itself as hard as it did. Why dissolve one of the most prosperous countries in the world into a bunch of tiny revanchist fiefdoms? On an economic level it makes no sense, why could more level-headed individuals in the central government not stem the nationalist tide that led to Milosevic and Tudjman? Even with Western sabotage a large number of people had to be convinced that what they had accomplished and the state in which they were living was a falsehood and worth destroying.

Well a lot had problems with Serbia's vote counting as 3 votes because of Vojvodina and Kosovo (let's not count Montenegro)
And like I mentioned, there were still wounds left over from ww2.
Though at the same side I like to mentioned that my father used to talk about Croat army friends he had in a good light.
And honestly it's sad to see Serbs hating Croats at one moment, but remembering the good times at another.

The debts caught up to them by the late 80s and they were forced by the imperial powers to go into structural adjustment. That sent unemployment skyrocketing and by the time Yugoslavia started breaking up by some estimates unemployment was as high as 70%
