Think about what happened after the mine wars. Schooling completely forgot about it - any class conscious history has been neglected to be taught at schools. The schools that taught the children of union men were owned by their bosses and the government. Kids are taught at a very young age to despise socialism. I distinctly remember learning about things like cuba, the revolution in russia, the rise of communism in the depression, unions, and nobody had anything to say but jokes regarding socialism and starvation because not only do the schools encourage jokes at the expense of bad historical figures further tainting their reputation in the minds of children, but most boomer parents are also classcuck anticommunists who teach their children to hate communists.
My dad was a racist who construed communists with welfare queens, and if you had a single class-based thought in your head, he scolded you for thinking like a nigger.
The school system is based on the prussian system, and children joke about bad historical figures, hurting the reputation of unapproved parties. No propaganda necessary, so the schools are technically unbiased.

1) a massive campaign and sustained action by the dictatorship of capital in America to aggressively suppress not just communism but anything even adjacent to it. I say it in this order because Wilson's reign was when the first red scare happened, Roosevelt was the closest America got to a "compromise" like Europe (and if you actually look at the American style of how this was implemented it was essentially just giving subsides and other deals to giant monopolies so long as the shareholders didn't go full regard in the stock market and paid their taxes. The culture that arose out of the new deal was actually quite individualistic and would ironically lead to the attitudes that lent boomers to neoliberalism so well which I'll get too in s minute) and during and particularly after Roosevelt the 2nd red scare got underway and so did the Cold War which western capitalists used to absolutely scare the shit out of Americans. Reagans era consolidated and made more extreme the institutional anticommunism during the last decades of the Cold War. Also when I say "concerted effort" during these decades I mean it. Even a lot of leftists underestimate just how far the State went to undermine literally anything to do with the Left or even liberals sympathetic to social democracy

Look up the history of NATO, the 1st and 2nd red scare, COINTELPRO, Operation Mockingbird, Operation GLADIO, the Congress for Cultural Freedom, the funding of the modern art movement by the CIA in the 60s, Gloria Steinhem, the "secret wars" in the 70s and 80s wages by the CIA, how the government systematically dismantled every single black power or civil rights group etc

2) Baby Boomers and Generation X were literally cultivated by western capitalists to be the most individualistic, consumerist and selfish generations possible. Chris Hedges and Naomi Klein are liberals but they do a good job of outlining how this happened in Death of the Liberal Class and No Logo respectively. To summarize, because the New Deal defused significant portions of organized labor while creating the cushion of the mostly white middle class baby boomers "anti establishment" attitudes had less to do with class struggle and far more to do with escaping the social c.onservstism of their parents. Because of the welfare state they were able to do this with little consequence other than disgust from the older generation until some actual radical sections of the 60s and 70s counterculture did arise. However, these radical elements were smashed and sometimes not even by the State but by their supposed fellow "revolutionaries". You can see the difference between the Old Left and the New "Left" in the discrepancy between respective popular slogans they used: the Old: "The people United can never be defeated" or "Peace, Land, and Bread" vs "Turn on, tune in, drop out" or "Make Love Not War".

When resistance did begin to form in the second half of Bush's tenure it was completely co-opted almost immediately. Any protest or demonstration or political candidate (such as Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader, etc) that wanted to actually change anything was marginalized and trivialized. Fox News soared during this time as did right wing talk radio and the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine under Bill Clinton ensured that there would be little to no challenge in right wing media to proto-fascist narratives.

Liberal media had followed the Democratic Party in shifting rightward and completely refused any antiestablishment views despite being critical of Bush in himself. This when the 08 crash happened the only 2 media perspectives were: this is too bad but it's a part of the best economic system ever invented so stop crying and tighten your belt vs this is all Bush's fault if we could just get another Democrat elected everything will be okay. This led to the election of Obama which catalyzed the Right to go full throttle and turn the Republicans into the essentially open fascist party they are now and also shifted the dems and the Liberal media even further right. When shit like occupy wall street, black lives matter, the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests, and so on happened Obama always was indifferent or dismissive as the police brutally repressed it and while both intelligence organizations and corporations co opted and reoriented these movements for their own ends. Now we have Trump who is doing what republican presidents always do after 8 years of a Democrat which is shift things as far right as possible. Because Obama was a center right Republican himself this means becoming the American Pinochet or creating the conditions for someone else to fill that role (perhaps pence if the retarded impeachment articles ever turn into an actual impeachment)
