I live in Japan and the average working day at my office is 14-18 hours a day 5 days/week (for an officially 40 hours/week job). If you want a real job in Japan you have to be willing to give up your entire life for it. If you want any free time at all you have to take a job that doesn't pay enough to actually survive on. The cost of living here is high. You can't survive on your own off a minimum wage or parttime job. That's why people give up and live off their parents. The choice is either work 60-80 hours/week or be a neet with no real option in between.
