Poodles have gotten a bad rap for being a froufrou dog, but they were originally bred for duck hunting. They're smart, loyal, and (depending on the heritage) healthy. If you live in a cold climate, keep their hair long, if you live in a hot one, clip it short. And while I've never tried it, I've heard that even the smaller breeds are good for mousing.
There are certainly breeds that are better at more specified tasks, but poodles are the best all-around dog I can think of off the top of my head.
If you can't get over the fact that it's a poodle they also come in plenty of different mixed breeds that have their own unique traits. (Labradoodles are great family dogs, more laid back than regular poodles.)
If you're insecure about your masculinity and refuse anything with "oodle" in it, then Golden/Labrador Retrievers and German Shepards are also nice "all-around' dogs. Although if you get a Labrador, make sure it's an American, and not a British one. American Labs are workers, British Labs are for show and as family pets.
