Dumb question but where did the idea of the halo come from?

It's a martyr's crown. The Greeks/Romans used to crown the winners of Olympic events and military campaigns, and the word used to describe struggling against sin is 'agon' which is where we get the word 'agony'. That word also alludes to physical training, which was a military as well as a sporting endeavour. Essentially the halo is the Greek equivalent of God giving people medals for heroic conduct, but the context of olympic crowns has been lost over time.

Think of it like the heavenly equivalent of a Medal of Honor, Gold Star, or Victoria Cross.

Neat Thanks

Anyone have more pics of Saint George? The Bishop for the, Serbian Orthodox church i've been attending. Came in, and told the story of Saint George, of his Martyrdom, How his Tomb now leaks Myrrh Oil in the holy land which has many Healing properties. Would like some more Icon of him thanks. And it's always nice knowing the story of the saint. Helps to know them as a person. And oh yea how, he was A roman Centurion, etc. But for me personally what struck me and i don't know why it took so long. But the fact, that he got so in line with god. That his tomb to this day is still leaking holy oil. Shows what endless opportunities await us, if we try.
