New York state just celebrated…CELEBRATED…passing a law that would allow people to painfully murder babies right up until the moment they pass through the birth canal, and allows non-doctors to perform the procedure. Here's the procedure in its horrific entirety.
Step 1: This fully formed human infant, capable of feeling pain and surviving outside the womb, is injected with digoxin, a cardiac inhibitor used for lethal injection. In Tennessee, inmates are suing to be allowed a firing squad as the alternative to this drug, despite being given morphine to dull the pain, and people are considering this…as a form of mercy for unrepentant, adult murderers, but not innocent infants. The injection is delivered via a large needle directly to the infant's heart. Step 2) If the infant survives this (which isn't uncommon), they are injected again. Step 3) Once the baby has been fully murdered, the monster who conceived him/her carries the corpse around in her womb for a few days. Step 4) If it doesn't occur on its own, labor is induced in this excuse for a human being so she can deliver the 6 lb. corpse of the human being who was forced to endure an excruciating death before taking his/her first breath for the convenience of a degenerate hedonist.
They aren't told this, btw. Abortionists like to pretend babies can't feel pain until they're born. The emotionally manipulative story that opens the "New Yorker" piece on this has the mother saying the child couldn't have survived and she didn't want him to suffer. He suffered far more than if she had carried him to term. Not sure if New York is this way, but in some states, it is fully legal to murder a living child who is born alive during an abortion, and even if it's not legal, it happens anyway in order to avoid being sued by parents who are now responsible for a child they can no longer legally murder. Firing Squad is arguably the most humane form of execution widely available. Injection can be easily botched and last many painful hours. Hanging can last minutes. Guillotines and decapitation can leave someone in conscious pain for up to 13 seconds. Firing squads offer reliable effectiveness; the prisoner is not going to suffer more than a few seconds on average, no more than a minute in the worst scenario. It's also pretty cheap. We're talking about execution, a grizzly affair altogether. Why not use the most efficient and readily available form of killing? Between injection and firing squad, I'd take firing squad.

I do not dispute your aim, but I think you're overselling firing squads compared to decapitation. Stories about the decapitated head still responding to stimuli are often overblown. And even if true, even if the brain is still screaming for seconds, it will do the exact same with a heart stopped. The brain will, in fact, take longer to die because there is still a body connected to that head, still muscular contractions that can force blood to the brain and a heart that limps to the finish line. As you say, to die by bullet can take a minute or worse. Also, if you've ever spoken to someone whose heart has stopped on them, you'll know it's pretty traumatic, and goes on for ages. What distinguishes a bullet to the heart and a severed head is not compassion, but mess. Decapitation is bloody and messy. A bullet or six, less so, and a poison in the vein even less so. And that's how we rate executions. What we should do is spontaneous gaseous asphyxiation.

But to be honest I have recently pondered the possibility that it could perhaps be more effective to treat crimes of passion and crimes of opportunity along with mere malice differently. With crimes of passion people could be committed to a different kind of institution, while still a secure one, functioning more as an actual rehabilitative mental institute in which the convicted could be more easily released after 15-20 years if their rehabilitation is deemed to have been successful.
Of course the metrics for evaluating such a thing would be likley to not be without much controversy, along without potential for individuals to pursue a deceptive plea to such in court. For current governments it's just easier to treat it as a thing to be budgeted making cuts to government institutions when desired and even resolving to the release of inmates due to overcrowding and inhumane conditions.
Rather than actually provide something to adequately satisfy the needs of society though, it appears to be easier to just wield the threat of incarceration along with incompetent authorities to the convenience of those with more power and wealth.
For a solution from a religious perspective as you propose, I think forcing them to take a vow of penance and pursuing a life of pious devotion while being incarcerated, on pain of excommunication and subsequent annulment of any clemency, could be a feasible way to go about it.
