Imageboards are a special place, where it's generally assumed you can say just about anything so long as it doesn't violate a board's topic and basic tenets therein. These aren't places where almost no conversations are taken seriously, and one's public identity is not linked to one's comments. Thus it's understandable that slurs and insults lose much of their weight in conversation, what little they truly have in the first place.
IRL it's a somewhat different matter. It's true that saying nigger doesn't actually do anything, and that in an ideal situation, all "offensive" words would be seen as impotent and meaningless as they are. But socialism is an internationalist emancipatory movement, and as such, casually saying "Oh shit nigger, what're you doing" is not something that will endear socialism to most people. Also, hard memeing offline is shameful and embarrassing.

It's probably better to say that whether something is insulting depends on its context and audience. This is trivially true (as will be admitted in most contexts), but some people find it difficult to admit it when they wish to be sanctimonious about someone using naughty words. Pretending to righteousness and moral purity, even letting alone political purity, is a common pastime on certain parts of the left. Or what's called the left currently.

That's pretty obvious I'd think. I mean, I have a friend who could screech the most heinous shit into my ear for an hour straight, but I'd not take it to mean anything. But if some rando on the street just muttered "nigger" under his breath, I'd suspect him to be legitimately racist to one degree or another. I just think that a successful socialist movement should not partake in social customs that alienate so many people, regardless that in the end it's literally just dumb spooks.
