Euthanasia

What's your stance on euthanasia? Here in Portugal, the parliament will have a vote on it today and the ones in favor are:
- Socialist Party, majority will vote for it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialist_Party_(Portugal))
- Left Bloc, everyone will vote for it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left_Bloc)
- Greens, everyone will vote for it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecologist_Party_"The_Greens")
- Animal Party will vote for it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People–Animals–Nature)
- Social Democrats, only a small minority will vote for it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Democratic_Party_(Portugal))

The ones against:
- Communist Party, everyone will vote against it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_Communist_Party)
- People's Party, everyone will vote against it (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDS_–_People's_Party)
- Social Democrats, majority will vote against it
- Socialist Party, minority will vote against it

So, it's gonna be narrow but I don't think it will pass here. Those with legal euthanasia in your countries, how is it working out so far?

Also, they president will probably veto it anyway because he's a catholic

I'm all for it, if people just can't live properly in the bodies they're in, they should kill it. True life is not in here anyway.

Without much noise. We've had legal euthanasia for a while now, and initially there was some arguing about catholic doctors, and hospitals in the catholic sector refusing to preform them, but that has since died out. There has been a gradual expansion of who can receive euthanasia, and it now includes children and people who suffer "mental anguish". As it always requires doctors, and if applicable mental health professionals to sign off on it, we can be fairly sure that no frivolous euthanasia occurs.

It is something no-one bats an eye at anymore. My mother has already raised the topic with me, in case she should ever become incapacitated. Seems only prudent.

Don't suicides go to hell, should it exist?

Never expected that coming from a christian. Isn't suicide a sin?

All proposals were rejected and the closest one was rejected 115-110. The 15 against votes of the communist party were the deciding factor really.

what do commies have against euthanasia?

Their arguments are
and

Sage&hide.

Why? It's a valid question

You shouldn't commit suicide, because you're here for a reason, in the sense that you chose to come to this world to experience it, whatever you chose, and to suicide is let's say to interfere with that. And it's not you who makes that choice (suicide), but the person, the personality, you are not that, just like you're not a human body, it's just a vehicle, and the personality, and the mind and intellect are tools for experience this world, but they are tricky and dangerous ones, and when u identify with them, i.e make them your identity, you will have problems, you will suffer, Buda talked about this. And you know, 99,9% of humanity are in this situation, that's why the world is what it is. But it's designed to be like this, and that's why you, me came here, to experience it. That said it's not that serious to suicide, but it should not be done.

On the topic of euthanasia, if the body simply can't function properly anymore like when it is on a vegetative state for example, that's it, the experience is over isn't it so euthanasia should be a possibility for these people.

I hate to call you out on theology but this is a deeply unchristian line of thinking. You eliminate free will. In all of what you said there is nowhere any room for a meaningful soul, to which can be attached virtuous and pious deeds. If you make my choice of suicide already inbuilt, God dos ot have need for me - I don't even exist.

I don't know what to think of it. The decidedly beautiful rantings of the religious (romantic?) like those below always fuck with my thinking.
On one hand, I think your life is yours and yours alone, so you should be 100% allowed to end it as you please. Not like someone can meaningfully stop you, anyways.
On the other hand, I can almost read into the "Let your loving gov- brothers and sisters heal you user, go home, don't kill yourself".
People should be allowed to kill themselves, but not if it is some huge cost to society.

It's early christian (when it still wasn't a religion), but updated lel. The choice of suicide isn't inbuilt, I didn't say that.

I do not recall this from Sunday school.

wtf did I just read? Just…what???

oppose because assisted suicide is a liberal distraction

all suicidals should revolt before throwing their lives away

The only reason they're pushing killing is for population control and to push poor people into suicide rather than expensive care. Dressing it up as a progressive, liberal position is just gross.

If I'm going to kill myself, or ask someone to kill me, I don't want any fucking doctors or social workers or bureaucrats breathing down my neck while I die. Let me die alone with some measure of freedom from this totalitarian shithole society, if it has to come to that.

Culling the unproductive part of the population is a logical conclusion of capitalism. This will manifest as euthanasia in the near future because the whole 20th century gave all that mass killings a bad rap, and the system can't simply ignore unproductive people and let them to their own devices anymore.

Euthanasia is mostly illegal, but unofficially, as far as I know, it's not uncommon for nurses or loved ones to "accidentally" disable a dying patient's life support, etc. I'm all for it, tbh. Why should you be forced to live when all it means is a few more painful months before you finally die?

Thats stuhpidd

holy shit dude take two seconds and consider what you really think, you're all over the place here

I'm against it, but I'm for normalizing normal suicides. With the exception of cases where a person in question is unconscious or disabled indefinitely.

...

It’s a proky scam to kill prols.

makes sence
no you

It was an entertaining read though.

It should be legal for those in severe pain, the elderly, and those with terminal conditions. Mental health conditions can be helped. Though I tend to be of the mind that your life is your own to take, if you're unhealthy in mind your capacity to make an informed decision is handicapped, so it pretty much cancels itself out.

Clinging to ancient Christian morality is civilizational regress
It should be a priority for every mortal being to consider, especially as the population ages
It's not like we need to invent dramatically more advanced techniques for assisted suicide
How much money does it really take to painlessly off someone? You could do it with a plastic bag ffs

What does it matter if the individual in question gives their consent? Their arguments suck. Leave it to the hard left to always ally with the hard right when it comes to modern social issues.
