What about Ethiopia

It was very unfortunate. There were tons of rebel groups popping up everywhere with US, Chinese, and West German support.
It didn't help that Somalia saw this weakness and invaded (also with US and West German backing) in an attempt to conquer the Somali majority region of Ogaden. And that there was a famine resulting from the endless war and drought.

Don’t forget two massive droughts that destroyed their agriculture.

As someone has already stated the Derg's progress much like Angola and Mozambique was constantly limited by the Civil war and conflict with Somalia (All of which was provoked by NATO / China / And if Mengistu's claims are believed possibly the USSR under Gorbachev)
Though some of the Dergs main accomplishments stood as the Abolishment of the Monarch and Feudalism the attempts at establishing a nationwide literacy and education system a Land Reform meant to to redistribute land (This mainly failed for a number of factors including the civil war and goverment incompetency and corruption and led to shortages)
It also certainly didn't help that this entire time the nations was in a state of constant drought
While the goverment itself was Marxist it sadly never moved past a state-capitalist period of economics as it could never really control the entire economic output of its economy

Effectivly immediately after the fall of the Derg the new "Democratic Socialists" / "Radical Democrats" immediately cucked out and undid most progress the serf hadattempted save not reinstating the Monarch

I posted some articles about this one Marx a while back and will try to dig them up again but to TLDR the goverment that has ruled since the dergs fall the "EPRDF" is seen as dictatorial corrupt and election riggers by large chunks of the Ethiopian population and thus some Ostalgie for the Derg (Albeit quite limited) has developed in some sectors of Society

He simply states that he was never "Pro-Albania" AKA he didn't agree with Hoxha's Foreign policy decisions / Albo-Soviet Split etc
Any "Dislike" was likely caused by a number of the rebel groups (Specifically those funded by China) Branding themselves as Hoxhaist

The Derg was fighting against other socialist movements, notably the EPRP who predated the Derg as the foremost socialist revolutionaries in the contrary in opposition to the monarchy. Somehow the Derg came into control after the initial revolution against the monarchy and instituted a "Red Terror" against the other leftist parties, including the EPRP who were not only also communists but also Marxists-Leninists. To be honest I am not sure exactly what was the source of the split and I dont know much about the crucial details.

The Derg, who recieved direct support from the USSR, tried to enforce their power in some very shoddy, heavy handed ways. But what were previously other leftist groups (like the EPRP) ended up accepting aid and then indirect guidance and then direct guidance from the US. The Derg did some real good in abolishing feudalism and orchestrating land reform, but ultimately I think they were a net loss because they seemed to be very much effectively a USSR puppet and perhaps forewent some strategies that could have been more effective because of it (I'm not an anarkiddie or even anti-USSR in any regard, just think they had a habit of encouraging ruling parties more on the basis of loyalty to them than on a basis of effective socialist revolution). If the country was ruled by a coalition of communist parties and the disastrous civil war and mutual atrocities that led to the infamous famine were avoided, Ethiopia could have become a serious socialist powerhouse with lasting potential outside of the 20th century, or less idealistically a powerful state-capitalist force like China that nonetheless could have ensured a more multi-polar world and kept Euro, American, and Chinese neocolonial interests out of Africa.

Open to hearing contradictory views I know only what I gathered from a few afternoons of curious googling. Really beautiful country, I hope its future is bright.

Sounds like more stupid smears to me. You'd whine about the Bolsheviks "fighting other socialists."
