bombing dresden was the humane thing to do, which is why the soviets asked them to do it. otherwise dresden would have gone the way of the other cities, with the nazis resisting to the last man and much more civilian deaths. thanks to the bombin the city surrendered peacefully.

I love how people don't know the real reason that Dresden was bombed was because the Allies didn't want the Soviets to capture a weapons depot that would've cut the war sooner.

The Red Army was just about to enter Germany just at that time & the "Big Three" had just met at Yalta. Dresden was a strategically significant far East German town with a well developed "Albertstadt garrison", that would've been very useful for advancing Soviet Troops to have used. Did the US/British Allies sacrifice the 25,000 inhabitants just to forestall the Soviet's victory? It's a no-brainer.

The occupation zones of Germany had been agreed at Yalta so why would the Allies care about slowing the Soviets down? And the Soviets weren't short on arms anyway.
