Jim Jones was a paranoid headcase. By the accounts of survivors/ex-members he'd been planning for the "White Night" before they even went to Guyana (one time he had to be talked down from going through with it). His deteriorating mental state (due to prescription drug abuse) and the arrival of Congressman Ryan resulted in him deciding to go through with "White Night" (i.e. the "revolutionary suicide" of everyone at Jonestown, whether they wanted to or not).

This. I understand being sympathetic to the organization overall but it was a cult, not a revolutionary group, and there was no excuse for the massacre. Yes, alphabet soup influence is understated in popular accounts as it always is. That is barely relevant in this case – they couldve fought, fled, made the children flee, but Jones was a cult leader not a strategic revolutionary and wanted his flock to go out ritualistically.
